There are four major times of the day that traders can choose to trade on. These trading hours will be based in either London, New York, Tokyo or Sydney time zones. Each trader has their own preference as they have different needs and goals for themselves as individual investors; however, there are three key sessions we can all agree on. The three most popular forex market session times are often referred to as the 'London, New York and Tokyo sessions.' These trading periods are when volatility is at its highest for traders. Traders based in Australia claim the Tokyo session time as their time, but you will find reference to the Sydney time zone all over the web. London is a major financial hub, and the [British Pound](https://acy.com.au/en/market/gbpusd) plays an important role in Forex Trading. You can trade during the European session, which starts at around 08:00 GMT and finishes at 17:00 GMT each day this coincides with business hours on both coasts. The New York forex trading session runs from 13:00 GMT to 22:00 GMT. The forex market is open 24 hours a day, and for those in Europe and North America, it starts Sunday night and trades until Friday evening in New York. ### What are the best forex trading hours for market activity? The best time to trade forex is when two exchanges are open at the same time. For example, the European and NewYork sessions overlap, and it is during this time you will see the most volume, activity, and opportunity. In Europe, the forex market opens at around 08:00 GMT and closes at 17.00 New York time, which means there are eight hours of trading between the two sessions - this is a good amount of volume for traders to take advantage of. In Asia, Tokyo is open from 22:00 GMT until 05:00 GMT, so traders in the Southern Hemisphere can get a start on their European counterparts. Once they have their positions set, they will get a surge in volume and volatility as the European and then New York sessions get underway. It is often not until around 3pm Sydney time or 1-2pm Tokyo local time that we move into a jog (ie volatility starts to pick up). #### London session: Now we are starting to see some action. The London session, sometimes referred to as the London fix, is officially open. Now we are at a more intense jog, moving into a sprint. #### New York session: This is the key session for traders. The cross-over between London and New York is where you want to be. Your trading systems will be in full swing, triggering many possible entries to go long or short. This is the session overlap that traders look forward to each day and trading with all forex brokers peaks. ### Forex trading hours for Australia One of the biggest reasons Australian traders move from trading stocks to Forex is the 24-hour nature of the markets. The Australian stock market is open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday. And, if you are an active trader, being able to trade around the clock at any time of the day is essential. Hence the vast number of Aussie traders making the transition from trading stocks to trading currencies. ### When does the Forex market open in Australia? The Australian FX market opens from 8am AEST which is when the New York trading session ends. And to be honest, the volatility at this time of the day is low.
