Farage used a private meeting with Bailey to push the governor to drop any plans for a so-called Britcoin, according to [The Guardian.](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/jun/18/nigel-farage-trying-block-britcoin-crypto-plans-bank-of-england-christopher-harborne) Like dozens of central banks around the world, the [BofE has been exploring the creation of a CBDC](https://www.finextra.com/newsarticle/47039/bank-of-england-seeks-input-from-businesses-on-digital-pound) for years, although not final decision has yet been made on whether to go ahead with a rollout. At a public event in October, [Farage told the audience](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wsy_fXHH1lA) that he regarded the idea of a digital pound with "total and utter horror," claiming that he was "prepared to go to prison" in order to stop it. The politician, whose right wing party leads the UK polls, insists that his opposition is based on an aversion to state control where a CBDC is "administered under digital ID". However, The Guardian notes that a digital pound could impact the fortunes of Christopher Harborne, a billionaire part-owner of the firm behind he Tether stablecoin. Harborne has donated around £25 million to Reform and made an undeclared £5 million personal gift to Farage. Both Reform and Harborne have denied that Farage's opposition to a digital pound is related to the Tether billionaire, with a Reform spokesperson telling the Guardian: “This is utter rubbish.
